Cheer up your home with fresh ideas plucked from the garden.
The Birds & The Keys
Feather your nest with a shabby chic birdhouse turned into a family key rack. We found our rose pushpin hangers at the hardware store in an antique brass patina and hung three on each side. It helps to make starter holes with a finishing nail, then you can lightly tap in the hooks. Here’s to not losing your keys!
Surprise Guest
Delight your visitors with gardeny accents in the bathroom. Inexpensive paper hand towels come in a variety of pleasant prints. Pick designs with realistically rendered orchids, poppies, or dahlias to go with any decor. Set them out on your counter in a tidy holder, then top the stack with a six-legged guest straight from the vegetable patch!
Culinary Art
Some seed packets are so enchanting, we find ourselves buying them for veggies we don’t even eat! So we thought, why not turn them into art to enjoy in any season? We used a copier to enlarge red radishes, purple eggplants, and green cabbages, then matted and framed them to hang in the kitchen. What a clever way to get your five servings a day!
Book Keeping
Whether it’s sweet, funny, or serene, garden art is almost always heavy! Put the weight of that outdoor statuary to work inside! Ditch the plastic doorstop and have a stone squirrel hold the door instead. Decorate your fireplace hearth with a weighty pair of copper cranes. Or let a sitting cherub keep your books upright. She’s one of the most glorious bookends we’ve ever seen.
Dress ‘Er Up
Gorgeous knobs can transform an ordinary credenza into something special. We found handcrafted flower knobs perfect for our project, but they were way too spendy. Time to make our own! We started by taking silk flowers apart layer by layer. We removed the dresser’s original knobs, slid the post through the flower centers, then screwed the handles back on. For just a few bucks you can put roses on your chifferobe, daffodils on your desk, or violets on your vanity!
