We love digging through bins of notions at the flea market. We never know what we’ll find! And we keep all the little goodies in a big jar just waiting for the perfect project. When we found a metal hair comb and a vintage brooch at the same time, we knew we wanted to make a vintage-style hair ornament. Here’s how we did it!
Tools & Materials
Metal hair comb
Vintage rhinestone brooch
Fabric rose bud cluster
Fabric leaves
Green satin ribbon, 1/4″ wide
Loose pearls
Flatback gems, Crystal AB
Wire cutters
Scissors
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Steps
1. Start by wrapping the top of the comb with satin ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the top, then between the teeth. Continue until the top of the comb is covered. Secure the ends with hot glue.
2. Remove the back of the brooch with wire cutters. Glue the brooch to the left side of the comb. Glue the leaves to the right side. Nestle the rose buds in the middle and secure with hot glue.
3. Tuck pearls and gems into open spaces and secure with hot glue.
Of course, your vintage finds will be different, but this should give you an idea how to embellish your comb. Just start by laying out your finds — paper roses, Victorian buttons, whatever you have — on the comb until you find an arrangement you like. Then go for it!
